Does AI recommend my products? A 15-minute check

You can find out for free in about 15 minutes. Here is the check, how to read it, and what to look at if your products aren't named.

The short answer

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google three questions your buyers ask, without your brand name, in a private window. If none of the answers name your products, AI doesn't recommend them for those questions yet. Check again on another day before deciding.

The 15-minute check

Free, no sign-up, works for any store. You need a browser and a note to write in.

  1. Write three buyer questions (3 min)

Questions a shopper asks before they know your brand: "What's the best leash for a large dog that pulls?" Leave your brand name out. Write prices with a currency symbol: "under $50".

  2. Open a clean session (1 min)

Use a private window. In ChatGPT, use a Temporary Chat so your history doesn't shape the answer.

  3. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google (6 min)

Ask each question in all three. In Google, note whether an AI Overview appears at all.

  4. Write down what they name (4 min)

For each answer: the products named, in order, and whether one is yours. Note the sites it cites.

  5. Ask again tomorrow (1 min to plan)

Answers change from one day to the next. A second day tells you whether what you saw holds.

Reading it

Named in most answers: AI recommends you for those questions. Named once: you're on the edge. Never named: not for those questions, yet. The products named instead are who you compete with in AI answers.

If AI doesn't name your products

Four free things to look at next, in this order.

Can AI read the page?

Check your robots.txt lets AI crawlers in, with the free AI crawler checker.

Does the page say what it is?

Run a product page through the free product page checker. The first sentence should say what it is and who it's for.

What do the winners say?

Open the product pages AI named instead. Note the facts they state that yours leave out: sizes, materials, who it suits.

Which sites does AI cite?

Review sites, gift lists, forums and retailers. Those pages are where AI gets its picture of your category.

Frequently asked questions

About checking whether AI recommends your products.

How do I check whether AI assistants recommend my ecommerce products?

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the questions your buyers ask, without your brand name, in a private window. Write down which products each answer names. Do it again on another day before drawing a conclusion.

Why does ChatGPT name my brand when I ask about it, but not when I ask for the best product?

Asking about your brand tells you how AI describes you. Asking a buyer's question without your name tells you whether it recommends you. Only the second one is what a new shopper sees.

Do I need to be logged in?

No. Logged out or in a private window is better: it shows what a new shopper sees, not an answer shaped by your own history.

When should I stop checking by hand?

When you want many questions, every day, in several assistants, across your whole catalog. That's the repetition a tracker like Produkto, which we make, takes over.
